Five Ways to Leave the House as a New Mom

Updated: Aug 22, 2025

Becoming a new mom is beautiful, but let’s be real—it can also feel very isolating. With all of the diaper changes, naps and feedings, getting out of the house can seem like an impossible task. But a change of scenery can do wonders for your mood, energy, and sense of self. If you’re feeling cooped up or craving some connection to the outside world, here are five simple, low-pressure ways to get out of the house with your little one—and feel like a human again.

  1.  Join a Baby-Friendly Fitness or Walking group

Moving your body and meeting other parents? That’s a win-win. Baby-friendly fitness classes—like stroller workouts, postpartum yoga, or mom-and-baby barre—give you a chance to stretch, sweat, and socialize without needing a sitter. Prefer something more low-key? Walking groups are a great way to get some fresh air, chat with fellow moms, and feel part of a community. You don’t have to be in top shape—just show up as you are, stroller and all.

  2. Take a Starbucks Trip (Yes, Really)

A drive-thru coffee run might seem small, but it can feel like a luxurious escape when you’re deep in the newborn trenches. That familiar cup, a quick chat with the barista, and five minutes of music that isn’t a lullaby can be a total mood boost.

Pro Tip: If you’re craving connection but feeling anxious about germs or sick season, invite a fellow mom to meet you in the parking lot. Park next to each other, roll down the windows, sip your drinks, and chat while the babies nap or wiggle in their car seats. It’s the perfect low-pressure, low-exposure hangout that still fills your social cup.

  3. Brewery or Tap room During Slow Hours

Your local brewery or taproom might be one of the most unexpectedly baby-friendly spots—especially during slow weekday afternoons. Many have open spaces, outdoor seating, and a relaxed atmosphere that won’t bat an eye at a stroller or a fussing baby. We went to a brewery at 11:00 am on a Wednesday.

Bonus: Invite a friend or partner to join you for an easy midday outing that feels like something you would’ve done pre-baby. A change of scenery + a laid-back vibe = an instant recharge.

  4. Purchase a Plant

It won’t cry, and it actually thrives on being left alone. Picking out a plant gives you a chance to breathe some fresh air, connect with nature, and add a tiny touch of joy to your space.

  5. Baby Circle at your Local Library

Most libraries do a baby circle where they sing songs and read stories. It is a great place to connect with other moms! You don't even need to show proof of residency so check surrounding towns as well.
